Parsons Brinckerhoff and Xstrata needed rigorous air quality studies for this proposed 30 million tonnes per annum open cut coal mine. Facing high profile legal challenges regarding the climate impact of coal combustion, excellent analysis of other environmental issues like air quality was essential. The Coordinator General recognised as ‘best practice’ the monitoring and dust management protocol we developed.

Following this success Katestone was commissioned to develop an Air Monitoring Plan. We designed the plan to integrate seamlessly into the protocol for maximum efficiency and maintenance of best practice standards. The innovative plan addressed three management zones. A meteorological forecasting system featured in the proactive and reactive strategies – to guide mine operational scheduling and equipment allocation; and to provide a ‘trigger action response plan’ for high dust conditions.

The forecasting system and real-time monitoring provided a best practice solution for the Xstrata JV, complying with legislation and development conditions.
